Know what foods are in season
Farmers markets allow you to buy the freshest foods at their peak. Do a quick search to find out what foods are in season in your area before you head to the market. That way, you’ll know what foods to expect when you get there.
Get there early
The best deals tend to go quickly. By getting to the farmers market early, you’ll beat the crowds and can have first pick at selecting the best produce and getting the best deals.
Make the rounds
Go for a quick stroll through the market when you get there. That way you’ll be able to scout for the best deals and items. There’s nothing worse than seeing higher quality produce at a better price after you’ve already made a purchase.
Ask questions!
We think that one of the greatest benefits of shopping at farmers markets is that you have the opportunity to make connections with growers face-to-face. It’s your chance to ask about pesticide use, GMOs, and organic growing practices so that you can make mindful choices about the foods that you eat.
Bring a few bags
Bags aren’t always provided, so it’s a good idea to bring a few reusable bags along with you.
Carry small bills
Farmers markets aren’t always capable of accepting credit cards. Make sure that you have plenty of $1 and $5 bills so that making change will be a breeze.
Leave room for the unexpected
You’re more than likely going to encounter foods that you’ve never heard of before. Go for it! You may discover flavors that you fall in love with. If you’re unsure about how to prepare a certain food, ask the grower. They’re always quick to offer their favorite recipes and cooking methods!
