Yoga has a heritage that is rich in traditions that stem from when the practice began thousands of years ago. Many of these practices are still observed today. One of the most interesting (and mystifying!) is the use of crystals.

You may have seen crystals on mats at your favorite CorePower Yoga studio, and you’ve probably heard about them on social media. Crystals have become hot items recently, but they’ve been used by yogis for many years.

It’s said that crystals carry certain energetic qualities, and that they can be used to help manifest creativity, healing and more (examples below). While there have been few scientific studies on the power of crystals, there is nothing wrong with believing in the magic of crystals, even if they just serve as a reminder of things you want to work towards.

Choosing the Right Crystals for You

Choosing a stone is 100% personal to you and your situation. The right crystal(s) for you will depend on what you identify with, your personality, where you are in life, etc. There are many different types of crystals, but we’ve outlined some popular stones that can be used for a variety of instances below.

Rose Quartz: If you’re looking for more love in your life, try rose quartz. This stone is known to attract unconditional love from others and also enhances self love and confidence

Amethyst: Yogis are often drawn to this crystal because it helps to tap into one’s Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Turquoise: This stone is popularly used in jewelry, but did you know it also carries healing energies? Turquoise promotes good health (mind and body) and encourages open communication.

Obsidian: If you’re struggling with self acceptance, let obsidian be your guide. Known as the “stone of truth”, obsidian can help you to come face to face with your full self and help you to find acceptance.

Clear Quartz: Thought to be linked to all of the chakras, clear quartz helps to cleanse the body and mind of negative energies. Clear Quartz is also known to bring balance to multiple parts of one’s life.

How to Use Crystals

Once you’ve decided on the type(s) of crystals you’d like to use, you can display them in a number of ways. Here are some ideas:

  • Make it a focal point on a table or mantel

  • Place a few on your desk at work

  • Wear them as a mala, ring or other jewelry

  • Keep them at the top of your yoga mat while you practice

  • Display them on an alter

  • Put them on a window sill where they’ll get plenty of sun and moonlight

When it comes to information about crystals, there is much to learn. Plus, they're just one of the many things that can help to deepen your yoga practice. As with everything in yoga, take what serves you and leave the rest.
