The first day of summer has lots of people thinking about sunshine, BBQs with friends and long weekends spent by the side of the pool. The first day of summer also coincides with the summer solstice, which is the day with the most sunshine for anybody living north of the equator.

The summer solstice carries special significance in yoga, which is often celebrated by completing 108 Sun Salutations (a sacred number in yogic and Hindu traditions). In fact, many CPY studios will be celebrating this special occasion by hosting special Summer Solstice classes to unite our community in breath, movement and intention.

Check the studio schedule to find out if your local CPY studio is hosting a Summer Solstice class. If you’re not able to attend a class, we invite you to join with the CPY community to complete 108 Sun Salutations wherever you are! Here’s the complete list of postures that comprise one Sun Salutation:

  1. INHALE - Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

  2. EXHALE - Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)

  3. INHALE - Halfway Lift (Ardha Uttanasana)

  4. EXHALE - High to Low Plank (Chaturanga Dandasana)

  5. INHALE - Upward Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)

  6. EXHALE - Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana

  7. INHALE - Look at the top of your mat.

  8. EXHALE - Arrive to the top of your mat

  9. INHALE - Halfway Lift (Ardha Uttanasana)

  10. EXHALE - Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
