Staying Motivated
Sometimes the hardest part about yoga is making it to your mat in the first place. You know you’re going to be glad you went, but getting motivated can be a struggle. We asked our CorePower Yoga team of instructors and studio managers how they keep themselves motivated to practice. We hope their responses inspire you, and help in making that decision to go to class a little easier!
Charlotte M. - Program Training Manager - SSC
"I struggle to stay motivated sometimes. It's why CPY has changed my life. Yoga has taught me to silence the committee in my mind that debates back and forth if I should treat myself well or self-sabotage. I make my practice, my feeling well, non-negotiable.”
Kevin H. - Aliso Viejo, CA
“I plan my classes to take the week before, I write the time and class in my day planner and make it a must to take time out of my busy day for that 60 minutes.”
Samson F. - Atlanta Midtown, GA
“Music! My favorite part of the yoga experience at CorePower is the music. All it takes is a quick conversation with a teacher about the songs they’re using and I can’t wait to jump on my mat!”
Robin R. - Old Town, IL
“My community keeps me wanting to get back to my mat everyday and the return I get back to myself after taking class. It is the full experience that I get back that keeps me wanting more and keeps me motivated even on the hardest days to just get there...the rest is the reward!”
Elizabeth S. - Lakeview, IL
“Making yoga dates with yoga buddies holds me accountable. I train twice a week with a trainer as well, he holds me accountable to making it to every session.”
Annie G. - Short North, OH
“I love to vary up what classes I take. I find if I only take one format, I get bored easily and am less likely to practice. I also try to plan out which classes I'm taking for the week on Sunday nights. That way I can carve out the time and really commit!”
Dominique L. - Ballard, WA
“My personal health is my biggest motivation to practice. I’ve gotta be honest, I am not getting any younger! My goal is to keep doing yoga until I am 110 years old! My three younger siblings help me be accountable for making it to my mat, I want to be a great example to them.”
Jewels P. - Falls Church, VA
“Our community and their dedication to their mat inspire me to stay motivated to practice. Having cancer, it can be difficult to hold myself accountable but then I remember our students, the daily struggles they share and remember to do what I can do on that specific day on my mat. Our students, instructors, and the overall energy of the studio keep me going both on and off the mat.”
Leigh Anne S. - Sherman Oaks, CA
“My own body keeps me accountable to my practice! It lets me know through stiffness or restlessness, that it's time to get to my mat! My motivation is the desire to stay present and connected to myself and my community.”
Anna L. - City Center DC, D.C.
“I’ve been practicing for 8 years and I still need help holding myself accountable from time to time. I love to make practice dates with other instructors or friends who practice at my studio. When I know someone is depending on me, chances are I will put in the effort to show up! By the time practice is over, I remember how much yoga fills me up, and I am hooked on that feeling again.”
Molly D. - Northwest Portland, OR
“I stay motivated to practice because I love to learn. I learn something about myself every time I make it to my mat. Strength is a pretty neat side effect though ;)”
Allison K. - Studio City, CA
“I keep myself motivated for my students. I know that my cup is way more full when I practice therefore I have more I can share with my students and loved ones. If I have more to share with them they will have more to share with me and it becomes a cycle of love and happiness...all because I took time to do yoga! To hold myself accountable for making it to my mat I schedule my classes at the beginning of the week. I plan my work hours around when I teach and make sure that I schedule in time to take class 5 days a week! If I write it in my planner I am much more likely to actually do it.”
