Ayurveda Tips for Dry Skin
Cold temperatures, moisture-robbing heat and dry air create conditions that can wreak havoc on your skin. Here are three tips rooted in Ayurveda that will help relieve dry skin in no time.
Moisturize with Coconut Oil
Not only is coconut oil full of nutritional benefits, it also acts as an amazing natural moisturizer. Use it to soothe dry hands, cracked cuticles or dry skin.
Drink Warm Water
The main reason your skin becomes dry in the winter is due to a lack of moisture. It’s important to replace the moisture that the dry air zaps from your body by drinking plenty of water. Ayurveda takes this thought one step further by advising us to drink warm water to help balance the Vata dosha, which becomes overstimulated during cooler months. Fill an insulated water bottle with warm water and sip it continuously throughout the day.
Balance the Vata Dosha
The Vata dosha can easily become overactive in the cooler months. Luckily, there are several things that you can do to help bring it back into balance. Vata is aggravated by cold, dry climates, so make sure you stay warm by bundling up. Next, include sour and salty foods into your meals. Snack on nuts and seeds, which contain healthy fats and oils that help reduce Vata. Last, make sure you incorporate grounding postures like Cat/Cow, Mountain Pose, Warrior I, Child’s Pose and Tree Pose into your yoga practice.
