Yoga + Cross Training
The secret’s out – yoga gives athletes results that no other form of cross training can offer. Athletes of all kinds attribute incredible physical changes and increased performance in their prospective sports to their yoga practice.
Here's just a few of the reasons why more and more athletes are incorporating yoga into their routines:
Yoga gives you an edge
Improved balance, better stability, increased strength and higher endurance are the Holy Grail of any cross training regimen. Yoga is unique in that it results in gains in ALL of these areas, and then some. Watch Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love discuss the upper edge that his practice has given him on the court.
Yoga helps prevent injury
Yoga strengthens and stretches muscles, joints and ligaments through their full range of motion. This results in increased flexibility and strength, which is exactly what you need if your aim is to prevent sidelining injuries.
Yoga increases your focus
Most athletes are aware of the physical benefits of yoga, but the calming effects of the practice often come as an unexpected surprise to many. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russel Wilson recently said in a Yoga Journal article, “We talk about being in the moment…so when I go into the game, everything is relaxed.”
Yoga boosts your energy
Take it from Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Greenbay Packers, who told The MMQB, “In the first three months of the offseason, I did a ton of yoga… I loved it. Absolutely loved it... My energy improved. I didn’t have to drink coffee as much the next day… [After yoga], it wasn’t necessary.”
