Meditation 101
Like yoga, meditation can feel intimidating at first. But if you start with the basics, you’ll find ways to make it your own and start to uncover all the benefits for your physical, mental and spiritual health. Sounds great, right? But in a world that never seems to slow down, getting to a meditative state can be a challenge.
What is Meditation?
According to Mindful.org, “meditation is the practice of learning how to return to, and remain in, the present moment—to anchor ourselves in the here and now on purpose, without judgement”.
Meditation is so simple because it can meet you wherever you are in your comfort level, without expectation. Meaning, whether you’re a meditation beginner or novice, you can find the process that’s right for you. For some, meditation looks like sitting still for a minute and taking a few breaths. For others it’s a guided meditation right when they wake up in the morning or a 30-minute practice sitting alone in silence with their thoughts. Whatever your comfort level is with meditation, here are a few tips to set yourself up for meditation success.
Why Should I Meditate?
Meditating, even just for a few minutes a day, can help to reduce stress, calm nerves, improve mood and increase focus. You can meditate anytime, anywhere and bonus: it’s free! Whenever you have a moment to close your eyes and tune into your breath, is a great time to meditate.
How Do I Meditate?
Meditation looks different on everyone – whether you’re sitting, laying down, have your eyes open or closed - find what works for you. Bring your attention toward the physical aspects of your breath (the rise and fall of your chest, the movement of air as you inhale and exhale) and drawing your focus away from the noisy chatter of your mind. As you notice your mind start to wander, do your best to focus your mind back to your breathing. That’s it. Really.
Sometimes it can help to find a special space to meditate. Look for a spot that is relaxing and makes you feel safe. Any space can work, whether it’s your bedroom, your living room or somewhere in your backyard. You’ll want it to be quiet and limit opportunities for distraction (no TV, phones, chatter). Whichever space you decide on, make sure to add your own zen.
Give It A Try
It’s important to remember that meditation doesn’t have to be a long, in-depth process (though it can be if you want it to be!). Even if you only have a few minutes to spare, meditating can help refresh your mind, clearing the way for good energy and positive vibes.
Here is a simple two-minute meditation to get you started. Think of it as your meditation training wheels.
The art of meditation is a practice and you shouldn’t expect to master it overnight. Be gentle with yourself and keep coming back to it – remember consistency over intensity.
