We met up with a few CPY teachers to talk about why they love yoga, how they stay grounded outside the studio and their advice to yoga newbies.

Laura B. Philly

Laura B.

  • How I remain grounded outside of the studio: It’s simple, I try to be the person my yoga mat thinks I am. It is easy to be grounded in and present in class, when adversity hits, I breath and be grateful for the lessons that it will bring.

  • How my practice makes me stronger: Yoga reminds me that I am capable and fully equipped for my life’s journey.

  • My advice to beginner yogis: Listen to your body and soul. If it hurts, don’t do it. If you are challenged, lean in.

Madeline G. Philly

  • Why I love yoga in 10 words or less: Yoga teaches me to feel, accept, love, and just exist.

  • A mantra I frequently come back to in class: Aparigraha- non-attachment: I encourage students to notice physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions throughout class, and remind them that there is no good or bad, no right or wrong. Throughout class we reflect on the impermanence of our shifting physical and mental being. Closely connected to that is Ahimsa, non-violence: I encourage students to create an inner voice that is first kind, gentle, and accepting towards all parts of themselves.

  • My advice to beginner yogis: Be kind and gentle towards yourself- your body, your mind, and your spirit. As you build your practice, you will continually unlock physical and mental awareness that can be beautifully transformative, but also leave you vulnerable to self-judgment, criticism, or greed (we’ve all been there!) Letting go of this negativity and fear, and creating self-compassion is essential to your growth.

Tal M. Philly

Tal M.

  • Why I love yoga in 10 words or less: Yoga helps me strengthen my relationship with myself.

  • How my practice makes me stronger: My practice reminds me not to compare myself to others. I shine when it’s my time.

  • My advice to beginner yogis: Everyone’s practice is different. Be patient. Each time you step on your mat is an opportunity for growth.
