Ayurvedic Tips for Summer
Considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science, Ayurveda is a holistic approach to health that is designed to help people live long, healthy, and well-balanced lives. The basic principle of Ayurveda is to prevent and treat illness by maintaining balance in the body, mind, and consciousness through proper hydration, diet, and lifestyle, as well as herbal remedies.
During the Summer months, increased heat can bring imbalance to the Pitta Dosha (one of the three Doshas that make up our being). When Your Pitta Dosha is out of balance, you might experience acne, heartburn, skin rashes, exhaustion or even impatience. Since none of that sounds like fun, here's some ideas to get your Pitta Dosha back in check:
1. Hydrate…we’ll say it again, HYDRATE.
The intense heat of Summer and additional sweating can quickly dry you out (even if you live in regions that are more humid). Try to drink at least 48oz of water each day. You can also go ahead and add an extra pinch of salt to your food in the summertime. Just a pinch! This will help compensate for the electrolytes you’ve lost through sweat and prevent fatigue.
2. Eat Cooling Foods
Avoid warm drinks and spicy foods, especially during the hottest times of the day. Instead, eat hydrating foods like fresh fruits and veggies. Smoothies are one of our favorite Pitta-calming snacks.
3. Use Cooling Essential Oils
Whether you use a diffuser or rub essential oils on your skin, make sure to choose oils with cooling properties. Sandalwood, Rose, Lemongrass and Spearmint are all great choices during the Summer months. Try filling a spray bottle with water and a couple drops of your favorite cooling-oil (2 drops of oil for every 8oz of water). Then give yourself a spritz every time you need a quick refresh!
4. Take Deeps Breaths & Meditate
Ease the Pitta Dosha by carving out a little time during your day to ground down. There are so many resources to help you meditate. Try a guided mediation or simply sit quietly for a few minutes taking deep breaths. Make it a moving meditation by taking a stroll in the early morning hours or when it starts to cool down in the evenings.
