Teacher Training Stories: Meredith Burke
Like many CorePower Yoga students, Meredith Burke, CPY Central States Retail Manager, balances work, family, hobbies and friends, all while maintaining a regular yoga practice. After three years of working for CorePower Yoga (and hearing about the Teacher Training program on a daily basis), Meredith decided to enroll in the Winter Power Yoga Teacher Training at CPY’s Cherry Hills Studio in Denver.
Although it was arguably the busiest time of her life, as she was in the middle of planning her spring wedding, the timing was perfect for Meredith. “I had wanted to enroll in Teacher Training for three years. I woke up one day and just knew that the time was right. I saw Teacher Training as something I could give myself during a hectic time in my life.”
We recently met up with Meredith and asked her to reflect on her experience.
What was a typical day like while you were in Teacher Training? Is this what you were expecting?
Busy. You really get good at time management. Every day was a little different than the last, as far as the sessions go. It was great, because it kept the training interesting and fun. Fitting in all of the class requirements, volunteer opportunities, studying/practicing, and group work was exciting but intense! Committing to class five days a week was tough, but it was worth it because I tried a lot of new things and expanded my skillset.
What was your most memorable moment from Teacher Training? Is there any particular class that sticks out to you?
I took a C1 at the Highlands Studio near the end of Teacher Training, and it suddenly clicked. There was something about the way the instructor taught the same flow I had been learning and practicing for six weeks straight that made my experience feel real and attainable. I couldn’t stop smiling after that class!
How did you feel after your last practice teaching session?
I felt really excited after my last practice teaching session. I knew that no matter what section I taught during our final class together, I had the support of my leads and the other TTer’s in the room to get me through. I remember thinking at the beginning of Teacher Training that there was no way I would be able to remember and understand everything, but by the end you surprise yourself. I couldn’t believe how far I’d come.
Looking back, in what areas do you think you’ve grown the most personally and in your practice?
I am so much more accepting: accepting of challenges as they come up, accepting of other people and viewpoints and most importantly, accepting of myself. I can now go to my mat and feel like I’m giving myself something extra special every single time versus competing with myself. I truly appreciate my body and where I am in my practice (and life!).
Use three words to describe your experience.
Busy. Surprising. Inspirational.
What advice would you give to somebody who just enrolled in Teacher Training?
Take it one day at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Let it sink in. Breathe. And ask for support if you need it. You won’t regret it!
