Fall is finally here and we’ve got our eyes on the pies. These Cinnamon Sugar Baked Apples are an easy and healthy alternative to traditional apple pie, and they taste as good as they look! Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 4 Granny Smith Apples

  • 2 tbsp Butter

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

  • 2 tbsp water

For the Crust

  • ½ cup and 2 tbsp flour

  • ¼ cub butter, chilled and diced

  • 2 tbsp ice water

  • 1/8 tsp salt

For the Topping

  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tsp water

  • Sugar

  • Caramel Sauce

Instructions

If you’re making homemade crust, this is where you’ll want to start. Store-bought crust is a great alternative if you’re crunched for time.

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the diced butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.

  2. Stir in the water one tbsp. at a time until the mixture forms a ball.

  3. Wrap in plastic, and refrigerate overnight.

Now for the apples…

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

  2. Scoop out the insides of the apples and coarsely chop.  Add them to a medium saucepan with butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and water over medium heat. Stir occasionally until soft, 15-17 minutes.

  3. Roll out piecrust into an even sheet, about 1/8” thick, and cut into ¼” thick strips.

  4. Stuff apples with cooked mixture and transfer to a glass baking dish. Carefully place and weave the piecrust strips on top of the apples to create a lattice crust – about 5 strips will fit on each apple. Trim the edges, and brush the piecrust with the egg & water mixture.

  5. Sprinkle with sugar, and bake until apples are soft, 35-40 minutes.

  6. Drizzle with caramel sauce and serve.
