Make the Most of Your Summer Days

Summer time and the livin’s easy, that’s what they say, right?  Days get longer and suddenly, you find yourself with more time on your hands even though the hours in the day remain the same.  Extra sunlight somehow brings out the best in us…we stay up later, get up earlier—life sometimes feels a little less serious and somehow, everything seems a bit more fun.  Here are some simple ways to make the most of your summer days:

Explore Your City!

Americans are working more and more and taking less and less vacation time. Looking to utilize a bit of your well-deserved PTO but can’t necessarily get out of town? Plan a good ole’ staycation instead! When we think of vacation, a lot of times we think of it as going somewhere far away via planes, trains or automobiles. However, one of the best things you can do with your time is to explore your very own city. Be a tourist of your own town: go to the museum, visit the local parks and recreation areas, try a new restaurant, attend an outdoor concert or go support your local sports teams.

Disconnect!

Longer days mean brighter nights!  Take advantage of this extended evening time and disconnect by going for a walk outdoors and without your devices.  Leave your phone at home! Without your phone, you won’t have the urge to respond to any emails or messages that come your way. You can also actually watch the sunset instead of Instagramming it.

Walk More, Drive Less!

Summers, for many parts of the country, are short-lived. Utilize your summer days as much as possible and get more fresh air—walk instead of drive! At work and need to grab lunch? Head to a local establishment by foot. Did you pack a cooler and do you have a nice outdoor space nearby? Grab your grub and walk to the nearest green area and enjoy your lunch in the sun. It might be a little warmer than your AC cubicle but an extra dose of vitamin D is worth a little sweat if it gives you an energy boost!

Eat and Shop Local!

Farmer’s markets are in full swing! Pick out a new recipe and head to your nearest farmer’s market and buy the freshest ingredients you can get your hands on. We don’t often have the opportunity to buy freshly harvested crops so take advantage of the farmer’s market buzz! Not only will your dinner taste better but you’ll be supporting local growers and businesses as well. It’s a win for everyone!

Get Wet!

Nothing takes you back to childhood like a good old-fashioned run through the sprinkler or trip to the local swimming hole. Grab your friends and get silly. Slip n’ Slides aren’t just for kids! Adults can have fun too; we just have to be reminded how sometimes. Plan an outing or event that involves water. Go swimming, take a canoe ride, have a water balloon fight or join your kids as they play in the sprinklers. Life is too short to not have fun so let go of your inhibitions and get wet, even if it means playing in the rain.

Whatever it is you decide to do, do it with vigor and have no regrets. Time is short and summers are shorter so take the bull by the horns, get outside and seize the day!
