You’ve heard it in almost every CPY class you’ve taken, whether it’s a C1, C2 or Sculpt class. It decorates the t-shirts in our studios and your yogi neighbor’s necklace. Om is everywhere, literally and figuratively, but what does it mean?
What Is Om?
There are many outward expressions of Om surrounding us these days, but this cosmic sound is also vibrating within us at all times. Uttered by Hindus, Buddhists and many others Eastern Religions since time immemorial, Om is said to be the most fundamental vibration of the cosmos and is part of the history of yoga. It's the most basic sound within our own bodies.
How Does It Work?
Sharon Gannon, co-creator of the Jivamukti Yoga Method says that as we chant this sound, it becomes the “great eraser,” resetting any old habits or patterns so that we may move forward in a new, fresh way.
When and Where Do I Use It?
The best part of Om is that can use it anywhere, anytime – during our classes in our studios or outside your yoga practice. It can be recited during five o’clock gridlock, in the mile-long airport security line, before you rush to react in a heated argument, and inside your own mind whenever you’re seeking serenity.
In fact, silence is golden when it comes to Om, as the vibration actually harnesses the most power when spoken soundlessly on the inside. With an amazing ability to calm and transform your thought waves from agitated to amicable, turbulent to tranquil, we believe Om is obviously worth repeating.
