Melissa Hernandez
Melissa first experienced yoga in college in 1999. She signed up for Power Yoga Fitness as an elective with no sense of what yoga entailed. Throughout the course, Melissa started to notice a sense of self, strength and empowerment. Raised in a highly athletic family, she had always been involved in team sports and personal training. At first Yoga seemed to be a way of “stretching” to de-stress the physical body from all of her vigorous athletic activities.
“Upon tackling inversions, I began to appreciate and love my body for its strength and capability. I no longer considered yoga a means of trying to change my physical shape, but rather appreciated yoga for helping me maintain a sense of mental peace and happiness. This was a huge milestone for me personally- to just be happy in my own skin, and live in the present moment.”
After graduating from college Melissa moved to Denver and found CorePower Yoga in her neighborhood. She immediately fell in love with the combination of heat, asanas, and diverse teaching styles. Soon after practicing at CorePower Yoga, Melissa signed up for the Teacher Training program. She began teaching yoga immediately after finishing the program. Melissa now resides in San Diego, filling her days with surfing and yoga - two activities she finds powerfully connected to one another. She is happy to call the CorePower Yoga Community her home.
