Dear Yogi,Perfect weather has arrived, which means running, hiking and biking trails await. Remember, your yoga practice provides an important complement to these repetitive motion activities. For quick relief, make your way into prasarita padottanasana, July's Asana of the Month; to immerse yourself in a deeper commitment, find CorePower Yoga's Weeklong Teacher Training Intensive Programs. With summer activities in full-force, surrender into the balance your body needs. |
Asana of the Month:Prasarita Padottanasana (Pra-sa-REE-tah pah-doh-than-AHS-anna) Prasarita = stretched out, expanded, spread, with outstretched limbs Pada = foot Ut = intense Tan = to stretch or extend
Summertime weather provides a realm of outdoor activities to complement our yoga practices. Biking, hiking and running trails await our presence, which inevitably means tight hamstrings. Find relief with this deep forward fold.
How to achieve Prasarita: From a standing straddle position with feet 3 - 4 feet apart, rest your hands on your hips and extend from your low spine, reach your chest high, and begin to fold forward from the hips until your upper body folds down between your legs. Make sure your feet are parallel if you have low back issues, or slightly turned in. Engage the quadriceps to allow the hamstrings to open safely, and shift your weight forward toward the balls of your feet. Head and neck are completely relaxed while the shoulders draw away from the ears. Spine stays long and neutral. Hands can rest on the mat in front of you, or for a deeper stretch, grasp your big toes with your thumb and your first two fingers, clasp your hands around your ankles, or slide your fingers underneath the outside of your feet.
If you have extremely tight hamstrings or a low back injury, modify this posture by placing each of your hands on a block rather than the floor, or place your hands on your thighs or calves, and soften your knees.
Prasarita provides length in the back body, relieves stress, headaches and insomnia. This is a great posture for those who sit at work, or practice any repetitive motion sports like biking or running. Enjoy the calming benefits of Prasarita Padottanasana after a strenuous workout or a long day. |

Dear
Yogi,The seasons have practically changed overnight. One day, Spring flowers are just beginning to bloom. The next day, the sun is rising at 5:30 am and the afternoon high is 90 degrees. In a time of sudden shift, allow yourself to find balance and equilibrium. Steady your body with ardha chandrasana, or revive your spirit with Darren Main's weekend workshop. Find what you need to stabilize your mind and soul. |
Asana of the Month: Ardha Chandrasana Half Moon Pose
(are-dah chan-DRAHS-anna) Ardha = half Chandra = glittering, shining, having the brilliancy or hue of light; usually translated as "moon"
In hatha yoga, the sun and moon represent the two polar energies of the human body. In fact, the word hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon. To achieve Ardha Chandrasana: From extended side angle pose (right foot forward), plant your right hand under your right shoulder and extend your back leg up to 90 degrees. Reach your left hand toward the ceiling, and create space between your two hands. Roll your left hip on top of the right but spiral your left inner thigh forward. Your torso should face the wall in front of you. Extend from the crown of your head to the back foot, root your grounded leg towards the earth and engage your belly. Allow yourself to be strong and solid in the pose. Turn your gaze up toward your extended hand, or if your balance is thrown off keep your gaze down. Half moon pose strengthens the core, ankles, thighs and spine, and also improves sense of balance and coordination. It is a great pose for runners, bikers and hikers. Discover your half moon and find harmony in polar opposition. |

Literature of the Month:Yoga and the path of the Urban Mystic by Darren Main "Remember that yoga, like all mystical traditions, is a practice, not perfection. It's the process of returning to your yoga practice over and over again that gives you the benefits... "Car horns will continue to distract you; the drama of your ego and external environment will pull your mind far from the practice of yoga, but eventually you will return. That is how it works. Try to let go of the idea that you need to do yoga perfectly to see its benefits and learn to enjoy the process of waking to a deeper understanding of who you really are. By doing this, you will know joy, and that joy will be your gift to a world that very much needs our healing." Namaste, Darren
